Abstract
Pulpitis is an inflammation of the dental pulp caused by the spread of a carious lesion or a dental injury. Depending on the extent and severity of the inflammation, the reaction of the pulp tissue and the symptoms vary. There are two main types of pulpitis: 1) reversible pulpitis, pain occurs when a stimulus is applied on a tooth and ceases with its removal. It is the initial phase of pulp inflammation, and this pathology usually requires conservative interventions by the dentist to maintain the vitality of pulp. 2) irreversible pulpitis indicates a more advanced stage of inflammation. Pain is usually severe and persistent as it does not subside after the stimulus is removed. Sometimes it is characterized as spontaneous and severe pain, leading the patient to seek help without a regular appointment or even at the most inappropriate times. It often involves extensive dental procedures and removal of pulp tissue.
Symptomatic pulpitis is an unpleasant condition for both, patient and dentist. The dentist must deal, not only with the inflamed pulp but also with the mentally stressed patient. Therefore, the management of pulpitis is complex and requires a proper strategy with a patient-centered approach.
The goal of this presentation is to help the general dentist to make proper diagnosis of pulpitis, to manage pulp pain before and during treatment and to choose the most appropriate treatment plan. Last but not least, a new classification of pulpitis will be mentioned and which are the treatments of choice based on this.
