Abstract
The need for additional disinfection of the root anal system and better control of apical inflammation led to the introduction of the intracanal medication concept as an intermittent step during the endodontic treatment process. Calcium Hydroxide is for the last 100 years the product most commonly used to this end, with applications not only in conventional endodontic treatment but also in other cases, such as dental trauma, resorptions etc.
Several past microbiological studies demonstrated not only intracanal bacterial reduction but possible inflammation control too with the use of Calcium Hydroxide. Consequently, a protocol of endodontic treatment in 2 or more sessions was established, using Calcium Hydroxide as an intracanal medicament between these sessions. However, this protocol is not universally applied. Modern studies show conflicting results as concerns the product’s clinical efficiency, arousing questions around its use or even necessity. Thus, a need for a modern and critical look towards the use of this substance in endodontic treatment is created.
This presentation focuses on reviewing the research background of Calcium Hydroxide in Endodontics. Furthermore, several arguments for and against its use will be presented followed by the appropriate literature justification, and clinical cases will be discussed. The aim of the presentation is not to end up with a conclusion concerning the use of Calcium Hydroxide, but rather to update and challenge the clinician to reflect on the protocol/-s that he/she is going to follow in everyday clinical life.
